moving out of your apartment

your time at sami might be winding down, but that doesn’t mean your move-out has to be a mess.

here are all the details you need so you can focus on what matters—like soaking up your last few days in Normal (and remembering where you packed your toaster).

we miss you already.

the important things

before we start sweating the small stuff, here are the first things to take care of:

know your move out date

spring move out is july 24th at 4:00pm.

your official date may differ, so always check your lease to confirm the specific date and time your lease ends.

don't forget your auto-payments

you'll need to cancel your automatic payments when your lease ends to avoid any additional withdrawals.

however, it's important that you don't stop payments until after your final payments go through.

once you've made those final payments, you can find a tutorial on cancelling any others here.

return your keys

all apartment and mail keys need to be returned to our office by 4pm on move out day. we do this drive-up style, so you won't even need to get out of the car!

any bedroom keys, just leave in the corresponding doorknob to avoid rekeying fees.

need to do an after-hours drop off before move out day? simply fill out our after-hours key form, place it in an envelope with your keys, and drop it in our office drop box. you can find that form here

now let's talk fine print

we want your move-out to be stress and hassle-free, so here are some things to doublecheck so you can avoid any issues or additional fees.

don't skip the speed clean

give the counters a wipe-down, run the vacuum, and toss any trash. and remember to keep the fridge plugged in and closed.

if extra cleaning is needed by our staff, a $30/hour fee could be charged.

put things back

make sure all the original pieces are still in place and reassemble anything you might have taken apart during your lease.

if you leave our team the heavy lifting, you might be charged additional fees for their time.

leave bedroom keys behind

while you'll return your unit keys and mail keys to our office, make sure to leave bedroom keys in the correct bedroom doors!

if bedroom keys are misplaced, a rekeying fee may be charged.

what if you need to move out in the middle of your lease?

while we do not allow tenants to break their lease, we know sometimes things happen. if life throws you a curveball and you need out of your lease early, utilize our subleasing option!

what is a sublease?

subleasing is when you sign your lease over to a new tenant who will then take over the remainder of your lease.

this gets you out of your rental agreement while allowing someone else to snag a last minute spot to live! you can read more about the process here.

are there requirements?

we have a few policies in place to make sure everyone is protected:

who can you sublease to
for 2, 3, or 4BR apartments, the subleaser must be a student and of the same gender as you. for 1BR apartments, they can be any gender, and / or a student.

what about fees
anyone looking to sublease your unit from you must pay the $95 application fee. once approved and accepted, they will also need to pay the move in / admin fee ($200/person).
as the original tenant, you will be asked to pay the $400 sublease fee.

still have questions?
our subleasing page has all the details, or you can contact our office to get started!

how do i get started?

the first step is to list your spot! add your name, contact info, and details about your apartment to our official subleases list. this allows anyone searching for a spot see that yours is open! you can find the form to do that here.

you can also post your place on the ISU Class of... Facebook groups for extra visibility. just don't post it on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace, because that's a no-go for safety reasons.
